		<description><![CDATA[For about a month I&#039;ve been researching gut microbes. My interest there is mostly in the amount of heat generated per gram of fecal microbe dry weight. Few realize that 50 to 60 percent of fecal material is gut microbes. I contacted several researchers but no one seems to know where to find data on this. All I&#039;ve found so far is some commentary about large herbivorous lizards describing how heat generated by gut microbes helps to maintain optimum body temperature for a time after the external source of heat is gone. http://www.anapsid.org/tracydigestion.html

The other interesting aspect of gut microbe activity is the fact that the eat what we eat. If they don&#039;t get a good selection of nutrients (think refined carbohydrates and purified vegetable oils), they don&#039;t reproduce well and constipation can become a problem.
